About Net Memoriam

Net Memoriam was created to offer a way for anyone of any belief or persuasions to commemorate their loved ones. We have put a lot of effort into trying to make it as neutral as possible but even if we try hard we realize that there are always some people who will be offended by a site like this. To those people we'd like to offer our apologies and assure you that this site is no attempt to ridicule the seriousness of someone's death.

The world is becoming more and more borderless with people moving all over the world in pursuit of career, love and adventure and we felt that in the future an obituary in the local newspaper won't be enough if you wish to tell your friends and family about your loss.

We also feel that a memorial plaque at their final resting place might not be enough either if family and relatives are spread around a continent or the world. Then an electronic memorial such as the ones this site can offer, may provide the means necessary for everyone to honour their lost ones.

Why did we create NetMemoriam?

Viv Sherriffs, Managing Director of NetSpan Solutions Ltd., the operators of NetMemoriam, writes:

"My wife, Patricia Morris, made a big difference to our company when she joined as the Director of Sales and Marketing. She built up the Internet and Web division of the company to be a significant part of our turnover.

"When she died unexpectedly in August 1999, it seemed natural to think of creating a memorial web site for her.

"Once I’d had that thought, I went on to think of creating another one for my mother, who had died earlier in the year.

"Then I realised that this was something that lots of people would want to do. The traditional means of commemorating loved ones are still valid today, but the spread of communications technology means that we can make our memorials visible throughout the World.

"That’s when I decided to create NetMemoriam, to offer a service for commemoration that could be used by everyone.

"In the few months that have passed since that decision was made, I’ve found that literally half of the staff here at NetSpan Solutions have lost someone close. I’m sure that this service will prove useful to all."

The ethos of NetMemoriam

We intend that the NetMemoriam web site should be a respectful place in which memorials and notices can be viewed. We therefore do not plan to display advertisements on the site, which is why we invite contributions to its maintenance.

We may include some information about the services provided by Funeral Directors, Florists, etc., but this will only be displayed by choice, not through banners and so on.

We offer partnership arrangements with other companies involved in funeral services, so that they may provide their clients with this new service as part of their overall package of services.
